Monkey Magic here in the UK recently had a whole weekend with Tom, and what a weekend it was! Tom is clearly a deep thinker, talented musician, and easy enough to get on with to be a great help to groups who choose to work with him.
What is great about Tom is that he has expertise in every area, so is not just a presentation coach, or just a singing coach etc, but can offer a wide range of ideas and expertise. For instance, he helped us with our sound on the Saturday morning, chord balancing on Saturday afternoon, and then performance on the Sunday (an area where Tom is unique from any other coach). On top of that, he helped us write down a real plan on how we were going to achieve our goals in both short and long terms.
Tom isn't a coach who will come in, tell you you're doing everything completely wrong, and try to change you into something you are not. He quickly realises your individual strengths and weaknesses and helps you grow into your own identity.
On top of that, he is a genuine and friendly person, and even got Monkey Magic's weird sense of humour!
Thanks Tom for a memorable weekend!

After spending just one evening with my chorus, it was quite clear how much difference Tom was going to make. He has that unique talent of taking a song and looking at it in a completely original way, stripping it to the bones, then rebuilding it so that everyone has the same emotional plan in mind. He looks at the areas where you can make the biggest impact on an audience and helps you enhance them. His coaching style is cool and relaxed and it was a pleasure to be able to work with someone so analytical, yet so positive and creative. The chorus took to his coaching style immediately which is so important when working with a large group. If you want to improve your singing just by doing a little more 'believing', then do not hesitate to get in touch with Tom.

The Greater Auckland Chorus were pleased to have Tom Metzger step in as replacement coach recently in New Zealand, to work with both the chorus and several of its quartets over 5 days, as one of their major preparations for 2009 regional contest. Tom proved to be just what doctor ordered and was able to give each group exactly what was needed to assist them in taking the next step to a higher level. He worked with a range of quartet levels and was able to adapt his work to suit. The chorus sings and performs at a very high level, so we were looking for that element of transcending the technical, and Tom was able to put into practise much of the reading he has been doing, to use the concept of a "story" for each song to bring out the passion, and to serve as a foundation for musical and high-level technical elements of better singing. It was fascinating how his guidance in selling the story managed to aid getting beyond the technical thinking that was going on, and add those much sought after elements of finesse and artistry, in shaping the music. It was also great to get a male perspective on some of our songs, to see some of the phrases in a different light and thus add new dimension to our delivery. Tom also did a lot of work with rhythmic feel on uptunes and swing songs. His own personal work on this sense of rhythmic patterns as a top performing Bass, has stood him in great stead for this aspect of the music, and it helped us hear and feel the songs in a new way. Best of all, the chorus had a lot of fun working in that way with Tom, and came away from a very intense weekend energized and looking forward to singing that way again! Several chorus members commented that working in this way, there appeared no anxiety that they have felt on other intensive coaching sessions. I'd have him back any time - in fact I've already booked him to return later in the year!

The Langley First Capital Barbershop Chorus was delighted to have Tom Metzger as a coach in the spring of 2009. Tom made himself available for a regular rehearsal night and also for an all day workshop. Tom’s reputation as a world class performer in Realtime preceded him but we had never experienced him as a coach. We were amazed at the way he inspired us and showed us the possibilities we could aspire to. It was all achieve with humour, a well organized presentation and factual knowledge based on a life time of study which he was only to willing to share with us. He was able to show us the technical things required to sing better but then combined that with being a better performer on stage. To quote our bass section leader… “I felt that it was the best coaching session in the 12 years that I've belonged to the First Capital Chorus. The improvement was certainly evident. I came away from the session exhausted but exhilarated. Kudos to whoever thought of bringing Tom in as coach”… Tom helped not only our singers, but also worked with the directors to allow the chorus to achieve even more. We will definitely want to have Tom back as a coach and a friend. Thanks. Danny Tryon Co-Director and VP Music and Performance First Capital Barbershop Chorus
