Willing and able to coach over the internet |
Singing barbershop all my life, I have experience with Harmony, Inc., Sweet Adelines, and The Barbershop Society choruses and quartets. Directing a Sweet Adelines Regional Championship Chorus (Song of Atlanta) 25 years ago began a long time love of working with others who want to enhance and perfect their performance and understanding of this art form we call barbershop.
I am currently directing a Harmony, Inc. chorus that has qualified for International six out of the seven years they have competed. I am a certified MUSIC judge of Harmony, Inc. and received a Certificate of Completion from the 2010 Barbershop Society Certification School.
In November, my quartet, MAKE', earned the 18th spot on the International stage having formed just 11 months before.

Jan 17, 2009 - In Person
I am the director of Silk'n Sounds and each year I choose a coach for our chorus winter retreat who I believe will help us with a particular area of weakness. In 2009 I specifically wanted a coach with specialty in the Music Category, and Kathy is a music judge. Kathy joined us for the entire weekend.
I was extremely pleased with the choice. Kathy approached our songs both analytically and holistically -- and it was the latter that we were really lacking. We had a story, a character, and motivation for the song but Kathy focused on the music itself -- not just details of the music but the overall theme of the music and how to make it work for the story/character we had in mind. In other words she knew how to utilize both the finer elements of the music and the song as a whole to achieve want we wanted to achieve. However, Kathy also made important improvements in our sound. She focused on "audiation" -- members hearing other parts on the risers and taking greater responsibility for their own part within the overall sound. And she pushed us in terms of phrasing and vocal production as well.
We found Kathy to be very easy-going and non-threatening even as she was demanding. Her easy manner worked incredibly well with my chorus. I felt that her interaction with me as a director was very collaborative and positive.
To top it all off, I should point out that at the next contest, where we performed the two numbers Kathy worked on with us, our score jumped by 78 points. We won the Rising Star Award in our area and qualified for the International Contest for the first time in our history.
